Three NIT Silchar Students Drown in Waterfall Tragedy in Assam’s Dima Hasao

Haflong: In a tragic incident, three students from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar, drowned in a waterfall in Assam’s Dima Hasao district on Saturday afternoon, officials confirmed.

The mishap occurred at the Bulchol (Hmunthajao) waterfall, an isolated spot in Bolsom Bagan under Harangajao. According to the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), the group of students had gone for an outing when the tragedy struck. “The incident took place when the NIT students visited the scenic but remote waterfall. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched after receiving the information,” a senior DDMA official said.

The deceased were identified as Sauhard Rai (20) and Sarbavartika Singh (20), both hailing from Uttar Pradesh, and Radhika (19) from Bihar. Rescue operations were hindered by poor mobile connectivity and the difficult terrain, which delayed coordination among teams. “A medical team was kept on standby. All three students were retrieved from the water, but doctors declared them dead,” the official added.

Authorities have expressed deep grief over the loss of young lives and have appealed to visitors to exercise caution while exploring waterfalls and other natural sites, particularly during the post-monsoon period when water currents remain unpredictable and dangerous.

Local officials noted that the incident underscores the urgent need for better safety measures, awareness campaigns, and improved access to remote tourist destinations across Dima Hasao district.
