Thunderstorm Disrupts Power Supply Across Parts of Sikkim After Multiple Transmission Lines Trip

Gangtok, March 16: Electricity supply was disrupted in several areas of Sikkim after a severe thunderstorm triggered faults in multiple high-voltage transmission lines, the state’s Power Department said in a statement issued on March 15.

According to officials, the storm on Saturday evening caused a conductor of the 66 kV Rorathang–Rungli transmission line to snap near the Amba area in Pakyong, leading to a power outage in the Rongli and Rhenock regions.

In Gangtok district, residents reported sparks accompanied by a loud noise near the Nami area along the 66 kV Marchak–Macleods transmission line. The incident affected electricity supply to areas including Singtam, Nimtar, Topakhani and the Khandong belt.

Officials also stated that the 66 kV LLHP–Sichey transmission line could not be sustained during trial charging, further complicating restoration efforts.

Meanwhile, in Mangan, heavy sparks and loud noise were observed near the G. B. Pant Wildlife Sanctuary during trial charging of the 66 kV Perbing–Phodong transmission line. The incident disrupted power supply across the district.

The Power Department said technical teams have been deployed to patrol the affected transmission lines and undertake repair work. Authorities added that efforts are underway to restore normal electricity supply as quickly as possible, though temporary outages may continue in some areas during the restoration process.
