Timjim Momin Seeks Probe into Engagement of Outside Labourers at Mendipathar Railway Station

Shillong, Feb 12: Timjim Momin, a public figure from Meghalaya’s North Garo Hills district, has approached the Deputy Commissioner seeking an enquiry into the engagement of over 400 outside-State labourers for rake loading work at Mendipathar railway station on December 28, 2025.

In his representation, Momin expressed concern that despite the availability of local tribal labourers, workers from outside Meghalaya were reportedly brought in, allegedly depriving local youth and daily wage earners of employment opportunities. He described the development as a threat to local livelihoods and warned that such practices could undermine the morale of the indigenous workforce.

Momin urged the district administration to identify the contractors or agencies responsible for hiring the labourers and to take action in accordance with the law. He also called for greater transparency in recruitment processes, suggesting that agencies involved in labour engagement should be required to disclose their hiring practices and ensure compliance with regional guidelines.

Citing constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule, he demanded that rake loading work at the railway station ensure full engagement of eligible local tribal labourers. He maintained that the Sixth Schedule was intended to protect the rights and interests of indigenous communities and that any deviation from these safeguards could set an adverse precedent.

The representation also flagged concerns among residents regarding possible infiltration into Mendipathar and adjoining areas, with apprehensions that individuals affected by eviction drives in neighbouring states might enter under the pretext of labour work. Momin called for strengthened monitoring and verification mechanisms, including stricter documentation and identity checks for labourers, to prevent any illegal settlement attempts and maintain law and order.

Appealing for prompt intervention, Momin said timely action would help safeguard local livelihood interests and uphold constitutional protections in the region. Copies of his letter have been forwarded to the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, the local Member of Parliament and MLAs of North Garo Hills, seeking coordinated attention from relevant authorities.
