Silchar: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) suffered a major organisational setback in Assam’s Cachar district after its district president Rajesh Deb, senior leader Mohan Lal Das and 48 other leaders and workers joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the first Silchar Municipal Corporation election. The new entrants were formally welcomed into the BJP by Assam party president Dilip Saikia at the party’s Cachar district office on Sunday. Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev was also present at the induction programme.
Saikia described the induction as an expansion of the “BJP family” and said the new members would strengthen the party’s organisational network in the Barak Valley. He also said the BJP workers would work collectively for the development of the region, Assam and the country. The latest political development comes after Sushmita Dev herself left the TMC and joined the BJP in June, marking another significant shift in the political landscape of the Barak Valley.

The defections have come less than a month before Silchar’s first Municipal Corporation election, scheduled for October 3. The 42-member civic body election is being viewed as an important political contest, with the BJP intensifying its booth-level organisation and voter outreach in the city. For the TMC, the exit of its Cachar district chief along with several senior functionaries and workers is a significant organisational blow as the party prepares for the civic polls. The BJP, meanwhile, is seeking to consolidate its position in Silchar and expand its organisational footprint across the Barak Valley ahead of the inaugural municipal corporation election.
