Udalguri-Sonitpur, April 24: The Tongla Town Youth Club will organise its second annual Spring Festival from April 30 to May 2 at the playground of Tongla Higher Secondary School in Udalguri district, with a series of cultural, competitive and community events planned over three days, organisers told The Assam Rising.
The festival will commence on April 30 with a cleanliness drive, followed by the hoisting of the festival flag by Celebration Committee President Nayanjyoti Baruah at 9:00 am. A tribute to martyrs will be offered by Principal Dr Dilip Kumar Baruah at 9:30 am, while a special programme in memory of artist Zubeen Garg will be held at 10:00 am. In the afternoon, the Bihu stage will be inaugurated by retired headmaster Narendra Chaharia at 4:00 pm, followed by a children’s solo Bihu dance competition and a junior category event later in the evening, to be inaugurated by Dr Debabrata Sen, Principal of Khoirabari College.
On May 1, a drawing competition in memory of artist Jugal Kishore Chaliha will be conducted in the morning by Kalyan Rabha and Himanshu Boro. The evening programme will feature an Assam-based open Bihu competition and ethnic folk dance performances, inaugurated by Baksa Senior Superintendent of Police Ujjwal Pratim Baruah.
The final day, May 2, will include ceremonial lamp lighting, fireworks and felicitation of guests. The cultural evening stage will be inaugurated by businessman Pabitra Boro at 7:00 pm. Performances by noted singers Shanta Uzir and Sandhya Menon are scheduled for 8:00 pm, followed by a musical performance by Dikshu at 10:00 pm.
The open Bihu competition will offer a top prize of ₹30,001, with additional awards for second, third and fourth positions. Special prizes will also be presented across categories including best male and female dancers, drummer, singer and traditional instrumental performers. Similar awards have been instituted for children’s and junior solo competitions.
Organisers said multiple sub-committees have been constituted to oversee preparations, with arrangements underway to ensure the smooth conduct of the festival, which is expected to draw participation from across the region.
