Gangtok, Jan 3: Vehicular movement on the Toong–Naga Road in Sikkim’s Mangan district resumed on January 3, restoring a crucial link to Chungthang and bringing much-needed relief to residents, commuters and transport operators after a prolonged closure. Officials confirmed that the route has been opened to traffic of all categories, ending months of disrupted connectivity in the region.
Authorities said vehicles will be permitted to use the road subject to a maximum load limit of 20 tonnes. The restriction has been put in place keeping in view the load-bearing capacity of the Bailey bridge at Ritchu, a key structure along the route. Motorists and transporters have been urged to strictly comply with the prescribed limits to ensure safety and avoid damage to the temporary bridge.
Officials also noted that the alternate road via Sankhlang–Saffo–Shipgyer to Chungthang continues to remain operational for vehicles of all classes. The availability of both routes is expected to improve the movement of passengers as well as essential supplies to the area.
The Toong–Naga Road had remained shut since September last year after heavy rainfall triggered landslides, cutting off access and causing significant inconvenience to local communities and traders. The reopening is expected to stabilise transportation in the region and support the gradual return to normalcy in Mangan district.
