Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday said around 80 per cent of households in areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) have been covered with piped drinking water connections.
Speaking on the first day of the Monsoon Session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Saha said the remaining work would be completed soon as the government takes steps to ensure drinking water reaches every village.
The issue was raised by Tipra Motha Party MLA Ranjit Debbarma, who highlighted water shortages in several ADC areas and urged the government to address the problem. Responding, Saha, who also holds the Drinking Water and Sanitation portfolio, acknowledged shortages in some hilly areas, where geographical conditions and the lack of suitable groundwater sources make conventional deep tubewells difficult to install.
He said the government was using alternative methods, including water from canals and waterfalls where suitable, to supply drinking water to remote and hilly areas.
Highlighting progress under the Jal Jeevan Mission, Saha said rural piped water coverage had increased from around 3.26 per cent in 2019 to approximately 86 per cent, with about 6.69 lakh of the state’s 7.50 lakh households now connected.
The government aims to achieve 100 per cent piped water coverage across Tripura in the coming days, he added.
