Biswa Bandhu Sen, Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly and a senior political leader, passed away late on Thursday night, December 25, while undergoing treatment at Aster CMI Hospital. He was 72. Sen had been battling a critical medical condition for several months following a massive brain haemorrhage.
He was initially hospitalised in Agartala in August, where doctors performed emergency surgery to stabilise him. As his condition remained serious, he was later airlifted to Bengaluru for advanced medical care. Despite prolonged treatment and intensive support, his health did not show significant improvement.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha confirmed Sen’s death through a post on social media, expressing deep sorrow over the loss and extending condolences to the bereaved family. Leaders across party lines are expected to pay tributes to the veteran politician, whose death has left a void in the state’s political landscape.
Sen was serving as Speaker of the 13th Tripura Legislative Assembly at the time of his passing. He represented the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency and had been elected to the House four times, reflecting his enduring connect with voters in the region.
His political career began with the Indian National Congress, under whose banner he won two terms as an विधायक. He later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, continuing his public life and rising to hold the constitutional post of Speaker.
According to officials, Sen’s mortal remains are expected to be brought back to Tripura on December 27, where last rites and official honours are likely to be held. His passing marks the end of a long political journey that spanned decades of public service in the state.
