Tripura Civil Society Calls 24-Hour Statewide Bandh on October 23

Agartala: The Tripura Civil Society has announced a 24-hour bandh across the state on October 23, demanding action against illegal infiltration, implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system, and full enforcement of the Tiprasa Accord.

Picketing will be held at around 25 locations, including three major sites in Agartala—the Circuit House, Tripura Assembly, and North Gate—with the possibility of more sites being added later in the evening.

Tripura Civil Society leader and Tipra Motha Party MLA Ranjit Debbarma said the movement has received widespread public support. “People from across the state are enthusiastic and ready to support the bandh,” he stated.

Debbarma emphasised that Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma has consistently engaged with both the state and central governments regarding these demands. “The Centre signed the Tiprasa Accord but has not implemented it. It has been 18 months, and there is still no progress. The government owes the people an answer,” he asserted.

He also accused the authorities of neglecting the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), noting that 38 bills passed by the Council remain pending with the government.

Raising concerns about illegal immigration, Debbarma said, “Just days ago, 24 Bangladeshis were detained. Such incidents occur almost daily. The government must take strong action against illegal Bangladeshis residing here.”

Warning of potential escalation, he cautioned that continued government inaction could trigger a statewide mass protest in the coming days.
