AGARTALA, Oct 30: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha inaugurated two completed blocks of the Agartala Lighthouse Project near the Akhaura border on Wednesday, making 278 flats ready for allocation to economically weaker and low-income families.
The newly completed ‘A’ and ‘F’ blocks were inaugurated during a ceremony at which Saha symbolically handed over keys to selected beneficiaries. Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal joined the programme virtually.
The two blocks form part of a seven-block residential project that envisages 1,000 flats in Agartala. Each unit measures around 30 square metres, or approximately 320 square feet.
Addressing the gathering, Saha said the project had encountered administrative and financial challenges during implementation, but these had been resolved with the assistance of the Union minister and other stakeholders. He expressed confidence that the remaining blocks would be completed and handed over within the stipulated timeframe.
Launched as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s affordable housing initiative, the Lighthouse Project uses modern construction technology to provide homes at a lower cost. Agartala is one of six cities selected nationwide for the initiative.
The flats have been built using Light Gauge Steel Frame technology, which the government says enables faster construction while offering a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to conventional methods.
Saha said the initiative was intended to give beneficiary families more than a roof over their heads, providing them with greater residential security and an opportunity to improve their quality of life.
He also emphasised the importance of maintaining sanitation, essential civic facilities and cleanliness within the residential complex, urging future residents to work collectively to ensure a hygienic and liveable neighbourhood.
The chief minister reiterated the state government’s commitment to extending access to secure housing for economically weaker sections and low-income households.
