Tripura Court Jails Man for 20 Years in Minor Abduction and Rape Case

A man in Tripura’s Unakoti district has been handed a 20-year sentence of rigorous imprisonment after being convicted of abducting and raping a minor girl three years ago. The verdict, delivered on Thursday by Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Amarendra Kumar Singh, also requires the convict to pay a fine of Rs 10,000. Should the man fail to pay the financial penalty, the court stipulated that he must serve an additional two months in prison.

The harrowing incident dates back to October 25, 2022, when the minor, who resided in Srinathpur within the Irani police station area, was first reported missing. Despite extensive searches by her family in the immediate aftermath, they were unable to locate her at the time. Subsequent investigation revealed that the accused had abducted the young girl and transported her to the Golakpur tea garden, where the heinous crime took place.

The case officially began after the survivor’s father lodged a formal complaint at the Irani police station, prompting authorities to launch an investigation into the matter. Following the complaint, the accused was apprehended, and a detailed charge-sheet was filed by the police. The judicial process unfolded over the past three years, culminating in the recent conviction and the significant sentencing. Public Prosecutor Sunirmal Deb informed reporters that the court’s decision represents a notable legal development in Tripura, underscoring the judiciary’s firm stance on crimes committed against minors in the region.
