Tripura Governor Launches Duck Farming Initiative to Cut Egg Imports

Agartala, April 23: Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu on Wednesday launched a small-scale livestock programme aimed at reducing the state’s reliance on imported eggs, distributing ducklings to women-led self-help groups at Lok Bhawan.

The initiative, implemented under the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission, covered five self-help groups from the Old Agartala RD Block and is part of a broader strategy to strengthen rural livelihoods through sustainable, low-cost income activities.

Addressing the media, the Governor highlighted a persistent gap in egg production, noting that a significant share of demand is currently met from outside the state. He said duck farming presents a more viable alternative to conventional poultry in Tripura’s conditions and could help move towards local self-sufficiency.

Officials stated that the ducklings distributed under the scheme were hatched at Lok Bhawan, with plans to establish a cyclical production system. Under this model, eggs produced in villages will be collected for hatching and redistributed over a six-month cycle, ensuring continuity and scalability.

To support expansion, hatching machines will be provided to participating groups, enabling them to increase output and generate additional income. The administration expects the programme to boost earnings for rural women while contributing to a more resilient local economy.

Senior officials, including TRLM Chief Executive Officer Tarit Kanti Chakma and West Tripura District Magistrate Vishal Kumar, were present at the launch.
