Tripura Plans Long-Term Water Security Strategy Through Gomati River Project

Agartala, June 25: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has directed officials to formulate a long-term water resource management strategy for the state, emphasising that future drinking water needs must be addressed through sustainable planning rather than short-term measures.

Chairing a high-level review meeting at the TIFT War Room on the proposed Gomati River-based water supply project for Agartala, the Chief Minister said the initiative should be developed not only to meet the capital city’s current demand but also to ensure water security for future generations across Tripura.

During the meeting, Good Governance Department Secretary Kiran Gitte presented an assessment of Agartala’s existing and projected drinking water requirements, highlighting the limitations of the current supply system and outlining the proposed surface water-based project.

Officials informed the meeting that a substantial portion of Agartala’s drinking water presently depends on groundwater sources. However, rapid urbanisation, population growth and recurring shortages during the dry season have underscored the need for a dependable alternative source.

The proposed project envisages drawing water from the Maharani Barrage area on the Gomati River in Udaipur and developing supporting infrastructure, including transmission pipelines, reservoirs and water treatment facilities, to ensure a continuous supply of potable water.

Reviewing the proposal, Saha instructed departments to work in mission mode and prepare a comprehensive state-wide water management plan. He also stressed the need to minimise water wastage, optimise available resources and strengthen rainwater harvesting and storage systems during the monsoon to create reserves for use during dry periods.

The meeting further explored the feasibility of establishing a permanent Gomati River-based water supply system and developing dedicated raw water reservoirs to enhance water availability during lean seasons.

“With determination and sustained effort, even seemingly impossible goals can be achieved. Long-term vision often lays the foundation for significant success,” the Chief Minister said, emphasising the importance of strategic planning and efficient governance.

The meeting was attended by Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, Assembly Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia, Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder, MLA Abhishek Debroy and senior officials from various departments.
