Agartala, Jan 6: Tripura Police on January 5 arrested Youth Congress leader Shahjahan Islam in connection with a 2025 incident in Shantipara that had triggered widespread tension across the city, officials said.
Superintendent of Police (SDPO) Sadar Deba Prasad Roy said Islam had made several controversial remarks during the incident, including comments directed at the Chief Minister, following which a case was registered against him. While his brother Khairul and father were arrested earlier, Islam had been absconding and remained outside the state for a considerable period.
Roy said police had received information over the past few days that Islam was hiding in the Jaipur area. Acting on specific inputs, personnel detained and arrested him on Monday. The accused is currently being interrogated, and further details will be shared later, the SDPO added.
In a separate development, Roy confirmed that police detained a Bangladeshi national from the Krishnanagar area late on Sunday night. The individual has been identified as Babul Mia and is also being questioned in connection with the matter.
