Tripura Traffic Police will begin a special enforcement drive against vehicles using unauthorised or unsafe lighting systems, with a focus on modifications that create excessive glare or resemble emergency vehicle lights.
The drive will cover vehicles fitted with high-intensity headlights, modified flashing lights and unauthorised combinations of red, blue and white lights. Police said such lighting can impair the vision of oncoming motorists and raise the risk of road accidents.
Dazzling or improperly altered headlamps, unapproved flashing mechanisms and lighting arrangements resembling those used by emergency services or law-enforcement agencies will be checked during the enforcement campaign.
The Traffic Police said vehicle lighting systems must comply with the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. Rule 106 specifies requirements relating to headlamps and their use, while Rule 108 regulates red, white and blue lights and restricts their unauthorised installation.
The department has advised vehicle owners to remove non-compliant lighting equipment and ensure their vehicles meet the requirements of the Motor Vehicles Act and applicable rules.
Police warned that legal action would be taken against violators once the drive begins and appealed to motorists to cooperate with enforcement teams. They also urged drivers to avoid using lights that cause glare or obstruct the visibility of other road users.
