Trump Claims India Scaling Back Russian Oil Imports After Call with PM Modi

Washington: US President Donald Trump has asserted that India is substantially reducing its imports of Russian oil following a recent phone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking to reporters after Diwali celebrations at the Oval Office, Trump said, “He’s not going to buy much oil from Russia. He wants to see that war end as much as I do… They’ve cut it way back, and they’re continuing to cut it way back.”

The President also highlighted the strong ties between the two nations, adding, “I love the people of India. We’re working on some great deals between our countries. I spoke to Prime Minister Modi today and we just have a very good relationship.”

Prime Minister Modi confirmed the exchange, expressing gratitude for Trump’s greetings. “Thank you, President Trump, for your phone call and warm Diwali greetings. On this festival of lights, may our two great democracies continue to illuminate the world with hope and stand united against terrorism in all its forms,” Modi said in a statement.

Earlier this month, Trump had told reporters during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that India had already “pulled back entirely” from Russian oil purchases, calling the move “a big step” in tightening economic pressure on Moscow.

India, however, has consistently defended its energy policy, maintaining that its oil imports from Russia are determined by national interest and aimed at ensuring price stability for domestic consumers.
