Two Arrested and Illegal Poppy Fields Destroyed in Fresh Security Crackdown Across Manipur

Security forces in Manipur conducted coordinated operations this week, resulting in the arrest of two active cadres and the destruction of illegal poppy plantations spread across hill terrain. The actions form part of the ongoing crackdown on militancy and narcotics-linked activities in the state.

The first arrest took place in Imphal East, where security personnel apprehended 44-year-old Thingom Sanamacha Meitei from his residence at Itham Awang Leikai under Thoubal Dam Police Station. During the search, officers recovered an SLR rifle with a magazine containing 12 live rounds, along with two radio wireless sets. Authorities said the seizure indicates suspected connections with militant networks.

A second operation on November 20 led to the arrest of another active cadre belonging to the proscribed group PREPAK. The individual, identified as Laishram Kiran Meitei, also known by the aliases Kirankumar, Romen and Angamba, was taken into custody from the Luwangsangbam locality under Heingang Police Station. The accused is alleged to have been involved in extortion activities in different parts of the valley. Two mobile phones and an Aadhaar card were confiscated from him during the operation.

In a separate action the same day, security forces worked alongside the district administration and the Forest Division to clear approximately 10 acres of illegal poppy cultivation in the Machi hill ranges under Machi Police Station in Tengnoupal district. The plantation was destroyed as part of sustained efforts to dismantle narcotics production and trafficking networks operating in the region.

Authorities confirmed that intensified ground surveillance and further coordinated actions will continue as part of the state’s broader strategy to combat insurgency and drug-related activities.
