Guwahati, Feb 9: Assam police arrested two men for illegally hunting birds in the Majerchar area of Dhubri on February 9, highlighting concerns over threats to fragile wetland ecosystems.
Dhubri Police acted on a tip-off and conducted a raid in the char belt, recovering carcasses of several local bird species along with an air rifle, indicating organised poaching activity. The seized birds included cattle egrets, pond herons, and spotted and collared doves, species commonly found in wetland and riverine habitats.
The accused were identified as Aminur Rahman (53) and Kaif Alom Khandakar (20), both residents of AK Azad Road under Dhubri Police Station. Police registered a case under relevant wildlife protection laws and said further investigation was underway to ascertain whether the duo was linked to a larger poaching network in the district.
Wildlife experts warned that repeated poaching in char and wetland areas could have long-term ecological consequences, as the loss of even common species disrupts food chains and weakens already vulnerable ecosystems.
Police said patrolling had been intensified in sensitive zones and urged residents to report any suspicious hunting or illegal wildlife trade.
