In a late-night operation, Assam Police apprehended two individuals from the Ratabari area of Sribhumi district on Saturday, seizing a country-made pistol, live ammunition, and counterfeit currency worth ₹48,000 from their possession.
Acting on a tip-off about suspicious activity in the Jalalabad market area, police launched a swift raid and detained two suspects. A search of their motorcycle led to the recovery of a 9mm pistol, one live round, and bundles of fake currency concealed beneath the seat.
The accused have been identified as Abidur Rahman (28) and Anowar Hussain (29), both residents of Taltala village under Nilambazar police station. Preliminary investigations suggest that the duo may be part of a larger network involved in the circulation of counterfeit notes and illegal arms trading across border areas.
Police are investigating whether the men had arrived in Jalalabad to distribute the counterfeit currency or to collect a consignment from another source. Officials said that interrogation of the suspects is underway to uncover the wider network and identify others linked to the racket.
