Two Assam Youths Arrested in ₹20 Lakh Jewellery Theft Case in Mangaluru

Guwahati: In a swift operation, the Mangaluru City Police arrested two men from Assam’s Cachar district in connection with the theft of jewellery and cash worth around ₹20 lakh from three flats in a Lalbagh apartment. The arrests were made in Bengaluru on Tuesday (October 21), less than 20 hours after the crime was reported, officials said.

The accused have been identified as Abhijit Das (24) of Panchagori and Deba Das (21) of Meherpur, both residents of Cachar district, Assam.

According to Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy, the duo allegedly committed the burglary between October 19 and 20, entering the apartment complex by scaling the compound wall and breaking in through a small kitchen window. The stolen items included gold ornaments, ₹5,000 in cash, 3,000 Dirhams, and a mobile phone.

The theft came to light after Riyaz Rashid, one of the residents, lodged a complaint at the Urva Police Station on October 20. A coordinated probe involving senior officials, fingerprint experts, and a dog squad quickly narrowed down the suspects.

The accused were later traced to Bengaluru with assistance from the Bengaluru City Police and subsequently arrested. Police have recovered a portion of the stolen property, and further investigation is underway to trace remaining valuables and determine if the duo was involved in similar crimes elsewhere.
