Two Bangladeshi Hindus Granted Indian Citizenship Under CAA in Assam

Two Bangladeshi Hindus have been granted Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019, in Assam, with one woman becoming the first in the Barak Valley to acquire nationality through marriage under the law.

According to local sources, the beneficiaries included a woman with the surname Banerjee from Badarpur in Sri Bhumi district and a 61-year-old man surnamed Goswami from Silchar town in Cachar district. Both received citizenship approval on Friday.

The woman, originally from Chattogram in Bangladesh, had entered India in 2007 to accompany a family member for medical treatment at Silchar Medical College. During her stay, she met a local doctor from Badarpur, whom she later married. After the CAA came into effect, she applied for Indian citizenship and was formally granted nationality, marking a first such case in the Barak region through marriage under the Act.

The second recipient, a 61-year-old man from Silchar, originally hailed from Bangladesh’s Moulvibazar district. He had migrated to India with his family in 1975 and had been residing in Silchar since then. Following the implementation of the CAA, he applied for citizenship and received approval, his legal representative Dharmanda Deb said.

With these two cases, the total number of Bangladeshi Hindus granted Indian citizenship under the CAA in the Barak Valley has risen to four.
