Guwahati, Jan 4: Police arrested two cattle thieves and recovered five stolen cattle following a chase in the Kaliabor area, officials said.
The incident occurred when a pickup van carrying the stolen cattle was intercepted at Bagori while travelling from the Kaziranga side towards Nagaon. Police signalled the vehicle to stop, but the occupants attempted to flee.
Police teams from Khatowal and Jakhalabandha pursued the vehicle. During the chase, the cattle-laden van entered a village road at Barbhagiya, where the driver lost control and crashed into a bamboo grove.
Police seized the vehicle along with the five cattle. Three accused initially managed to escape, but with the help of local residents, one suspect was apprehended at Barbhagiya, while another was caught by villagers in the Hatigaon area and later handed over to the police.
The arrested accused were identified as Abdul Jalil, a resident of Misa Garhbasti, and Saddam Hussain of Rupahi Kawaimari. Police said the cattle had been stolen earlier in the night from the Purani Gudam area.
