Tripura Police detained two persons after allegedly recovering two country-made pistols, three magazines and eight rounds of 7.65 mm ammunition during a special checking operation at Shalbagan on the Agartala-Khowai road on Sunday night.
According to a senior police official, the operation was conducted around 9.50 pm on September 6 near the BSF headquarters at Shalbagan following intelligence inputs from the Assam Rifles Field Intelligence Unit, Agartala, and 35 Assam Rifles.
The official said a joint ambush was laid after information was received that two persons were allegedly carrying illegal arms and ammunition while travelling on foot from Domdomia towards Agartala.
The suspects were intercepted and detained at the spot. They were identified as Suraj Kumar, 29, from Bihar’s Lakhisarai district, and Srikant Kumar, 36, from Vaishali district.
Police said a personal search allegedly led to the recovery of two country- or factory-made pistols, three magazines, eight rounds of 7.65 mm ammunition and two mobile phones with SIM cards.
The two suspects allegedly failed to produce valid licences or other legal documents authorising possession of the firearms and ammunition.
The recovered items were seized at the spot in the presence of an Executive Magistrate and independent witnesses.
The accused were produced before a court, where police sought five days’ remand for further investigation.
