Hajo: Two 14-year-old girls lost their lives and another was severely injured after a speeding SUV ran over three schoolgirls on their way to tuition classes at Saniadi in Hajo, Kamrup district, early Saturday morning. The Bolero, reportedly coming from Guwahati, hit the girls from behind around 6 am.
One of the victims, Adnin Neha, died on the spot. Najmina Akhtara and Sahina Akhtara were rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in critical condition. Najmina later succumbed to her injuries, while Sahina continues to undergo treatment.

Eyewitnesses said the SUV was being driven at high speed and suspected the driver was under the influence of alcohol. Locals claimed they discovered alcohol bottles and multiple number plates inside the vehicle. Angry residents set the vehicle ablaze and later blocked the road demanding justice.
Police from Hajo and fire service personnel rushed to the location to bring the situation under control.
The tragedy has reignited concerns over rising road fatalities in Assam. According to data released by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the state recorded 4,072 deaths from traffic-related accidents in 2023, reflecting a 5.8% increase from the previous year.
