Two Shillong IMD Scientists to Join 46th Indian Antarctic Expedition

Two meteorologists from the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Meteorological Centre in Shillong will participate in the 46th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica, contributing to observations aimed at improving scientific understanding of climate variability and global weather patterns.

Partik Kumar and Dheeraj Chaudhary will represent the department in the expedition, officials said on Tuesday.

A farewell ceremony was organised in Shillong for the two scientists ahead of their departure. Addressing the gathering, Thangjalal Lhouvum, head of the IMD’s Meteorological Centre in Shillong, emphasised the value of Antarctic observations in tracking climate change and understanding weather systems worldwide.

Data collected during the mission is expected to support research into atmospheric processes and variations in the Earth’s climate.

The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), functioning under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, serves as the nodal agency for implementing the Indian Antarctic Programme.
