Two-Wheeler Hits Army Casspir in Manipur’s Churachandpur, Minor Injuries Reported

Imphal, March 26: A two-wheeler collided with a Mine Protected Vehicle of security forces along the Churachandpur–Kangvai axis in Manipur on Wednesday evening, March 25, officials said.

According to a press release, the Mine Protected Vehicle (Casspir) was moving in accordance with traffic norms when it was struck by the two-wheeler. Authorities stated that the rider and pillion were allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

Both individuals sustained minor injuries, described as superficial lacerations. Army personnel immediately evacuated them to District Hospital, Churachandpur, where medical examination confirmed that the injuries were not serious. Doctors also indicated that the two individuals were intoxicated, the release added.

Security forces maintained that the vehicle was being driven with due caution and in line with established operational protocols during the incident.

The statement further noted that despite what it described as a prompt and responsible response by the forces, certain elements attempted to incite unrest in the aftermath of the accident. This reportedly resulted in damage to vehicles belonging to Central Armed Police Forces, as well as public property, and caused disruption in parts of the area.

Reiterating its position, the Indian Army stated that it remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, restraint, and cooperation with civilians. It added that details of the incident were being shared transparently and cautioned against the spread of misinformation.

The statement urged all sections of society to exercise restraint, maintain peace, and allow due process to take its course.

Tensions have remained elevated in parts of Manipur amid ongoing ethnic unrest. Earlier this week, security forces were deployed outside the residence of Henlianthang Thanglet after a group of local youths allegedly attempted to storm the premises. The situation was later brought under control.

The development comes shortly after a meeting held on Sunday between Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and leaders of the Kuki-Zo Council in Guwahati, marking the first such engagement since ethnic violence erupted in the state in 2023.
