Two Youths Detained for Allegedly Defacing Public Walls with Wangchuk Portrait in Guwahati

GUWAHATI, July 18: Two youths were detained in Guwahati for allegedly defacing public property by painting a portrait of activist Sonam Wangchuk on a public wall in the city’s Basistha area, police said on Saturday.

The detainees were identified as Nukul Mili and Gaurav Singh. According to police, a night patrolling team intercepted the duo while they were allegedly attempting to paint another public wall.

Police said the two had earlier painted a portrait of Wangchuk on a wall in the Basistha area, following which a case was registered at Dispur Police Station.

A separate case was also registered after the duo were allegedly caught attempting to paint a wall under the Bishnu Jyoti Project.

Officials said defacement of public property would not be tolerated and maintained that no individual has the right to vandalise public assets.

Police said the two youths would be released later on Saturday after being served notices in accordance with the prescribed legal procedure.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
