An active member of the banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) [ULFA (I)], identified as self-styled SS Corporal Samiran Chetia, also known by his alias Prabin Asom, surrendered before Tinsukia Police on October 28.
According to police sources, the operation leading to his surrender was conducted jointly by Tinsukia Police and security forces after receiving specific intelligence regarding his presence in the area. The operation concluded without any exchange of fire, resulting in Chetia’s voluntary surrender.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that Chetia, a resident of Jagun in Tinsukia district, joined the ULFA (I) in 2022. Before his association with the outfit, he was reportedly linked to the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN).
Security officials described the surrender as another milestone in the ongoing counter-insurgency operations across Upper Assam. They noted that sustained security pressure and continuous engagement initiatives have led several insurgents to abandon militant activities in recent months.
Police further stated that Chetia’s surrender is likely to provide valuable intelligence on ULFA (I)’s network and movement patterns, particularly along the Assam–Arunachal border. Interrogation and debriefing of the surrendered cadre are currently in progress.
