ULFA(I) Attack Raises Security Concerns Ahead of Assam Polls in Tinsukia

Tinsukia: A recent attack by ULFA (Independent) has intensified security concerns in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled for April 9. In the early hours of March 22, suspected ULFA(I) militants carried out “Operation Bujoni,” firing rocket-propelled grenades at the 4th Assam Police Commando Battalion camp at Jagun. At least four commandos were injured in the 20–30 minute exchange of fire, prompting a high alert across the district. The attackers reportedly fled towards the Arunachal Pradesh border.

Tinsukia Police have emphasised coordinated efforts with central forces, including Central Reserve Police Force and Central Industrial Security Force, to ensure a secure environment for the polls. Joint search operations involving multiple agencies are currently underway. The district’s proximity to forested border areas and its connectivity to insurgent routes has long posed challenges for security forces. Officials say the terrain allows militants to move swiftly, complicating surveillance and response efforts.

Harmeet Singh, Director General of Police, visited the injured personnel and assured strict action against those responsible. Authorities are also focusing on securing vulnerable polling stations, preventing intimidation, and strengthening intelligence networks. With counting scheduled for May 4, security agencies remain on high alert, working in close coordination to ensure peaceful and orderly elections despite ongoing insurgency threats.
