Shillong: A new community-driven beautification project was launched in Umpling on Wednesday, reinforcing Meghalaya’s ongoing efforts to revitalise neighbourhoods through active public participation. The initiative, valued at Rs 10 lakh, forms part of phase three of the Locality Beautification Enhancement Project, a state scheme that supports local communities in upgrading their surroundings while encouraging tourism and civic involvement.
The launch was officiated by District Commissioner R M Kurbah, accompanied by Additional Deputy Commissioners P T Passah and S Warjri. Speaking at the event, Kurbah commended the residents of Umpling for adopting a distinctive approach that blends modern design with traditional cultural motifs, distinguishing the project from conventional urban development efforts.
Locality headman S F Pyngrope expressed gratitude for the district administration’s continued financial support, noting that such assistance has been instrumental in helping community-led initiatives take shape in the area.
The beautification effort is part of a wider push across Meghalaya to encourage grassroots participation in urban improvement. Funding under the scheme is allocated through a competitive process, with preference given to localities that present innovative and impactful proposals aimed at enhancing public spaces.
