Uncontrolled Gas Leak at ONGC Pipeline Triggers Alert in Charaideo District

Sivasagar: An uncontrolled gas leak at an Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) pipeline in Assam’s Charaideo district has put authorities on high alert, with natural gas continuing to escape despite ongoing containment efforts.

The leak was reported from the Laiphaleng LP-1 manifold at Bakata Patsaku Laiphaleng and is suspected to have been caused by excessive pressure in the gas transportation system. Following the incident, ONGC technical teams rushed to the site and initiated measures to control the leak. However, efforts to fully contain the gas flow had not been successful till late Saturday.

Officials from the district administration, along with ONGC personnel, have established monitoring and safety measures in the surrounding area, given the potential risk posed by the continuous release of gas. Experts have cautioned that natural gas is highly flammable and could trigger a major accident or explosion if it comes into contact with any ignition source.

As a precaution, emergency response teams have been deployed and are maintaining heightened vigilance around the site. Engineers are working to isolate the affected section of the pipeline and stop the gas flow from the manifold.

ONGC has so far not disclosed the exact reason behind the excessive pressure that led to the leak, nor has it indicated when the situation is expected to be fully under control or when normal operations may resume.
