Bilasipara: The Under-16 Inter-District Girls’ Kabaddi Tournament began with great enthusiasm at the Indra Narayan Mini Stadium in Bilasipara. The tournament opened on a melodious note with the rendition of Assam’s legendary singer and music icon Zubeen Garg’s timeless song ‘Mayabini Ratir Bukut,’ which filled the atmosphere with emotion and reverence. Organised under the aegis of the Assam Kabaddi Association and in collaboration with the Bilasipara-Chapar Kabaddi Association, the two-day sporting event aims to promote kabaddi among young girls across the state.
The tournament was inaugurated by Dr. Preeti Lekha Deka, Co-District Commissioner Bilasipara, while the flag was hoisted by Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh, President of the Assam Kabaddi Association. Following the inauguration, dignitaries and guests paid floral tribute to the portrait of the late Zubeen Garg and lit ceremonial lamps while singing his immortal song in unison as a mark of respect. A total of 24 teams from 30 districts of Assam are participating in this state-level competition.

All participating players are under 16 years of age. The event has brought a festive and sports-oriented atmosphere to Bilasipara town. Speaking at the event, Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh, Chairman of the Assam Government Marketing Corporation, former MLA, and President of the Kabaddi Association, said – ‘Sports are not just about competition; they are a medium for building character and discipline among the youth. We must encourage the younger generation to actively take part in sports.’
The event witnessed an impressive turnout of spectators, players, and sports enthusiasts. Organisers expressed hope that such tournaments would provide a common platform for both rural and urban players and further strengthen women’s kabaddi in Assam.
