Guwahati: A woman’s body wrapped in a blanket was recovered from a rented house in the Hatigaon area late Friday night, triggering shock and suspicion in the locality. The incident took place at Lakshmi Nagar, where the house had been rented by a couple who were reportedly living together for the past one and a half months.
The tenants have been identified as Rohan Kashyap, also known as Nayan Das, and Banjita Rabha. Though they had introduced themselves as husband and wife, neighbours later revealed that the two were in a live-in relationship.
According to initial information, Banjita had recently gone to her hometown in Boko, during which Rohan allegedly brought another woman to the rented room. When Banjita returned on Friday night, she was shocked to find the woman lying dead on the bed, wrapped tightly in a blanket.
Hearing the commotion, neighbours informed the police. A team from Hatigaon Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after midnight and conducted searches. Officials recovered ₹1.5 lakh in cash, suspected drugs, and other objectionable items from the room, raising the possibility of illegal activities.
Forensic experts and CID teams examined the scene, and the body was sent for post-mortem. Police suspect the woman may have been killed earlier in the day, though the cause of death will be confirmed after medical examination.
Meanwhile, the prime accused, Rohan Kashyap alias Nayan Das, has fled and is currently absconding. A manhunt has been launched to trace him.
It has also come to light that Rohan is married and has a young daughter, despite cohabiting with another woman.
Police have detained his live-in partner, Banjita Rabha, for questioning. Investigations are underway, and officers are probing whether the case is linked to a love triangle.
