Unpleasant Situation Arises Over Hatidhura College Students’ Union Election 

Tamarhat: A tense situation has developed at Hatidhura College, located along the Assam-Bengal border in Dhubri district, over the upcoming Students’ Union election. Alleging irregularities by the college authorities, the students have filed a written complaint with the Dhubri District Commissioner against the principal and the election officer of the college. They have also lodged an FIR at Tamarhat Police Station last night. According to information received, the college authorities had issued a notification on October 31 announcing that nomination papers for the Students’ Union election would be filed on November 4, while the election itself would be held on  November 12.

Meanwhile, the ABVP, NSUI, UDSF, and Sachetan Yuva Chatra Samaj had selected their respective candidates for the contest. As per the announced schedule, candidates supported by Sachetan Yuva Chatra Samaj and UDSF submitted their nomination papers between 10 am and 2 pm However, it is alleged that candidates supported by ABVP and NSUI failed to submit their nomination papers within the stipulated time. Consequently, some students belonging to the Sachetan Yuva Chatra Samaj reportedly prevented the ABVP and NSUI candidates from submitting their papers later and locked the election cell room on November 4, triggering chaos on campus.

Following the incident, the Golokganj Revenue Circle Officer ordered an inquiry and issued a notice to the college. However, despite the room remaining locked, the college authorities went ahead and published the list of candidates from all four groups. In response, students and UDSF backed candidates submitted a complaint to the Dhubri District Commissioner and filed an FIR against the college principal and the election officer at Tamarhat Police Station. Additionally, UDSF supported students organized a protest today within the college premises, condemning what they described as the arbitrary decision of the college administration.

Meanwhile, students affiliated with UDSF, NSUI, and ABVP have demanded an impartial investigation into the locking of the election room and necessary action against those responsible. As a result of the ongoing unrest, regular classes at the college have been severely affected.
