UPPL May End Alliance with BJP by December, Says Party Leader

Kokrajhar: The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) may part ways with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by December this year, signalling a potential realignment in Assam’s political landscape ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Addressing a press conference in Kokrajhar on Wednesday, UPPL General Secretary Raju Kumar Narzary said that while no final decision has been taken yet, the issue will be discussed and decided during the party’s Triennial Conference scheduled for December.

“As of now, the UPPL continues to remain in alliance with the NDA both at the state and central levels,” Narzary said. “However, discussions on the party’s future political course are ongoing, and the leadership will take a collective decision in due time.”

Narzary further said that the UPPL’s immediate focus is on strengthening its organisational base across the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) in preparation for the forthcoming elections. To bolster grassroots engagement, the party is planning to organise bike rallies across all Assembly constituencies in the region to connect with the public and energise local cadres.

The UPPL, which currently governs the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) in alliance with the BJP, has been a significant partner in Assam’s ruling coalition since 2020. However, reports of growing differences between the two allies have fuelled speculation about a potential split.

Political observers note that a formal breakup could reshape regional dynamics, especially in the BTR, where the UPPL commands substantial influence.
