Dhakuakhana: Veteran journalist Atul Baruah, a prominent media personality of Ghilamara and a founding figure in local journalism, passed away on Thursday, plunging Dhakuakhana and adjoining areas into deep mourning. He was undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, where he had been admitted for the past three days. Following a sudden deterioration in his health, he was shifted to the ICU, where he breathed his last.
Born in Ghilamara Cinai village, Atul Baruah was a respected and committed journalist who served the profession for decades. He was an active member of the Lakhimpur District Journalists’ Association, a founding president of the Ghilamara Press Club, and a senior journalist known for his integrity and grassroots reporting. During his long career, he worked with leading Assamese newspapers including Dainik Janambhumi, Asomiya Pratidin, Amar Asom, and others from Ghilamara.
Baruah had also served as Vice-President and General Secretary of the Lakhimpur District Journalists’ Association, contributing significantly to strengthening the journalists’ fraternity in the district. He was 55 years old at the time of his demise and is survived by his wife, a son, and other family members.

Condolences poured in from across the state. Assam Journalists’ Association President Madhusudan Medhi and Secretary Mukutraj Sharma, North East General Secretary Jagat Bora, and leaders of various press clubs and journalists’ bodies, including the Lakhimpur District Journalists’ Association and multiple press clubs across Lakhimpur district, expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. The passing of Atul Baruah marks an irreparable loss to Assamese journalism and the local media community.
