Veteran Journalist Baikuntha Nath Goswami Passes Away at 80

Guwahati: Veteran journalist Baikuntha Nath Goswami passed away peacefully in his sleep at his residence in Hengrabari, Guwahati, on Friday. He was 80.

Goswami, a noted figure in Assamese journalism, served as the editor of the weekly Asom Bhumi Kakaṭa and was one of the founding members of the Guwahati Press Club. He is survived by his daughter, Sushmita Goswami, who currently serves as the president of the Guwahati Press Club.

Born in August 1946 in Bamunkuchi, Pathsala, Goswami later settled in Hengrabari Housing Colony. Over the course of his long career, he worked as a freelance journalist and columnist, contributing to several Assamese newspapers, including Niyamiya Barta and Asom Bani. He held editorial roles at Agradoot, Dainik Janambhumi and News Star, and retired as the Patna Bureau Chief of United News of India (UNI). He also edited the now-defunct weekly Saptahik Nilachal.

An accomplished author, Goswami published several works, including Jnanamala I and Jnanamala II, collections of folk tales, and Nibandha Chayan, an anthology of essays. His other notable works include Asomiya Jatiyatadab aru Asomiyar Sangjna and Sangbad Madhyamar Swadhinata, reflecting his deep engagement with Assamese identity and the role of the press.

Goswami is remembered for his unwavering commitment to journalism and his contributions to Assamese literature, which continue to inspire journalists and writers across the state.
