Morigaon: Tension flared in Mayong on Thursday after angry villagers blocked the convoy of Cabinet Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary in front of the Mayong Police Station, protesting alleged police inaction following a cattle theft incident.
According to reports, residents of Raja Mayang village staged the protest early in the morning after three cows were reportedly stolen from the area on Wednesday night. Accusing the police of negligence and failing to curb rising theft cases, the villagers gathered outside the police station demanding immediate arrests.
The situation escalated when Minister Patowary’s convoy, en route to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary for the inauguration of a new entry gate, reached the protest site. The crowd blocked the road, preventing the convoy from proceeding further, despite repeated appeals from the police to clear the way.
Additional security personnel were deployed to the scene to maintain order. While the standoff lasted several minutes, no incidents of violence were reported.
Minister Patowary was later able to continue his journey to Pobitora, where he was scheduled to attend the official event as the chief guest.
