Voters’ List Deletions Spark Anxiety Among Indigenous Muslim Families in Bongaigaon

Bongaigaon: Nearly 40 indigenous Muslim residents from South Deohati and Choutaki villages under the Abhayapuri Legislative constituency in Bongaigaon district have reportedly found their names deleted from the electoral rolls during the ongoing Special Revision (SR) process, triggering anxiety and resentment among the affected families. Among those whose names were struck off is Nazrul Islam, a central committee member of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Minority Morcha, lending political significance to the episode. The families concerned claim they have been permanent residents of the area for generations and have consistently exercised their voting rights over the years.

Local residents alleged that the deletions followed complaints submitted by unidentified individuals through the SR mechanism, raising concerns over possible misuse of the process. “Our forefathers settled here decades ago. We have voted in every election, yet our names have suddenly disappeared,” said one affected resident. Community members noted that the indigenous Muslim families have long lived peacefully alongside predominantly Hindu neighbours and remain deeply integrated into the local social and cultural fabric. They cautioned that such developments could unsettle long-standing communal harmony in the area.

Expressing strong resentment, the affected residents have demanded immediate intervention by the government and election authorities, a thorough review of the deletions, and legal action against those allegedly responsible for filing false or malicious complaints. While no official statement has yet been issued by the Election Commission authorities, local officials confirmed that representations from the affected families are being received and the matter is expected to be examined in accordance with due process.
