Agartala, Dec 28: A woman was allegedly assaulted and publicly humiliated by a group of villagers in Tripura’s Dhalai district over suspicions of an extramarital relationship, police confirmed on December 28. The incident took place at Harerkhola village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Kamalpur police station, and has sparked widespread condemnation.
According to the police, the victim, a mother of two sons, was dragged out of her house on Saturday morning and beaten by a group of villagers. She was also allegedly subjected to public humiliation after being forced to wear a garland made of shoes. The assault reportedly unfolded in full public view, leaving the woman severely distressed and injured.
After receiving information about the incident, a police team rushed to the location and found the woman lying on the road. She was immediately shifted to the district hospital in Ambassa, where she underwent medical examinations, including a CT scan. Police officials said her condition is stable and she is out of danger.
A case has been registered at Kamalpur police station against several individuals involved in the incident, and an investigation is currently underway. Police confirmed that one accused has been arrested so far, while efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend others linked to the assault.
The Tripura Commission for Women strongly denounced the act, terming it a serious violation of a woman’s rights and dignity. Commission Chairperson Jharna Debbarma said the police had already registered a specific case and taken action by arresting one of the accused. She stressed that no individual or group has the authority to take the law into their own hands and called for strict legal action against all those responsible.
Debbarma further stated that a team from the Commission would visit Kamalpur on December 29 to meet the victim. She said the Commission would actively intervene in the matter to ensure that justice is delivered and the woman receives necessary support.
