World Children’s Day Turns into Youth-Led Rights Movement Across NE

Guwahati: World Children’s Day 2025 transformed into a powerful youth-led advocacy movement across Assam and the Northeast, as children and adolescents took the lead in demanding safer communities, prevention of child marriage and uninterrupted education for girls. The campaign, rooted in UNICEF’s mandate of ensuring every child survives, learns and is protected, placed young people at the centre as creators and equal partners to government and civil society.

The observance was anchored by “My Day. My Rights. My Game.”, a storytelling series featuring adolescents from the Brahmaputra Volleyball League who documented their lives using mobile phones, highlighting gaps in education and protection. Amplified by UNICEF and influencers, the content reached over one million people, mobilising strong public support.

Senior leaders reinforced children’s voices, including Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who reiterated the state’s commitment to end child marriage and ensure safe, empowering spaces for every child. Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu, musician Alobo Naga and actress Kripalaxmi Gurumayum encouraged families to support children’s rights to education, play and safety.

A major policy milestone emerged as Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar proposed a Juvenile Justice Secretariat for the Northeast to strengthen child-friendly judicial systems. In another landmark event, children symbolically took charge of the Assam Police through the “Vaartalap with Children” initiative, engaging officers on cyber safety and community protection.

To mark the occasion, 45 landmark buildings across Assam and Meghalaya illuminated in blue, symbolising solidarity with children’s rights. UNICEF reaffirmed its long-term commitment to build a Northeast where every child can grow with dignity and opportunity.
