Udalguri, June 3: More than 1,000 Nahor saplings will be planted across Assam this year under the leadership of journalist Sanjoy Baruah as part of the observance of World Environment Day 2026. The initiative will be dedicated to noted Assamese singer and cultural figure Zubeen Garg, who is described as being closely associated with nature and environmental values.
The decision was taken by Seuj Society during a central committee meeting, where members approved the special statewide plantation programme.
According to Seuj Society president Sanjoy Baruah, who will lead the initiative, the campaign has been designed to honour Zubeen Garg’s affinity for nature while also promoting greater public awareness on environmental conservation. He said the effort aims to strengthen community participation in tree plantation activities across the state.
As part of the programme, Nahor saplings—considered among the favourite trees of the artist—will be planted in different parts of Assam during World Environment Day observances. The organisers expressed hope that the initiative will encourage younger generations to take a more active role in environmental protection and contribute to building a greener and healthier state.
