Nalbari, June 1: A late-night attack in Assam’s Nalbari district has sparked tension and widespread concern after a 19-year-old youth was killed and an 18-year-old girl sustained critical injuries in an alleged assault at Gangapur under Mukalmua on May 30.
The deceased has been identified as Madhurjya Barman (19), a resident of Balipathar in Chamata, while the injured victim is Mridumudra Deka (18) of Gangapur. According to reports, the two were travelling on a scooter when they were allegedly attacked by two individuals identified as Roz Ali and Ashik Ali.
Madhurjya Barman succumbed to his injuries at the scene. He was serving as the Assistant General Secretary of the West Nalbari Regional Students Union. Mridumudra Deka was rushed for emergency medical treatment following the incident and is currently undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Hospital sources said her condition remains critical.
According to local sources, the victims were returning home from Nalbari town when the incident occurred. They were later found lying on the roadside with severe injuries and multiple wounds visible on their bodies.
The incident has triggered outrage among residents and various local organisations, with demands growing for swift action against those responsible. While some groups have attempted to link the case to allegations of “love jihad”, authorities have not officially established or confirmed any motive behind the attack.
Residents and civil society groups have called for a fair, impartial and comprehensive investigation, urging law enforcement agencies to identify all those involved and ensure justice for the victims and their families.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. Further details are awaited as the probe continues.
