Guwahati: Two individuals arrested in connection with the investigation into singer Zubeen Garg’s death, Amritprabha and Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, are set to be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court today (October 17).
The duo, who were taken into custody on October 2, will be brought to court after 9 am, where they are expected to be remanded to judicial custody following the hearing.
In anticipation of potential unrest, tight security arrangements have been implemented along the route from the CID headquarters to the CJM court. Additional police personnel, including plainclothes officers, have been deployed to ensure a smooth transfer process.
The heightened security follows the recent violence in Baksa, where clashes erupted outside the district jail during the transfer of other accused in the same case. The incident had raised serious concerns about maintaining law and order during sensitive court proceedings.
Meanwhile, Baksa District Magistrate Gautam Das has issued a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), restricting gatherings within a 500-metre radius of the Baksa District Jail in Mushalpur. The order, which came into effect on October 15, was prompted by violent protests that saw demonstrators pelting stones at a police convoy, injuring a female officer and damaging vehicles.
The unrest broke out as five other accused — Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Sandeepan Garg, Nandeshwar Bora, and Paresh Baishya — were brought to the jail under heavy police escort. Security personnel had to use batons to disperse the crowd, detaining several protesters in the process.
All five accused are currently being held under strict surveillance and special security arrangements inside the Baksa jail complex, while the CID continues its investigation into the circumstances surrounding Zubeen Garg’s untimely death, which has sparked widespread emotion and calls for justice across Assam.
