The family of late Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg on December 12 expressed relief and cautious optimism after the Special Investigation Team filed its chargesheet in connection with the singer’s death, naming four accused and formally moving the case into the judicial arena. Garg’s wife, Garima, said the family now looks to the courts for timely justice and accountability.
Speaking to reporters, Garima said the probe was initiated based on the FIR lodged by the family and proceeded in line with their expectations. She conveyed gratitude to the investigating agency for conducting the inquiry as anticipated, adding that the outcome of the investigation reflected what the public had been seeking since the case first came to light. According to her, the responsibility now rests with the judiciary, in which the family has full faith.
Garima said there is hope that the legal process will move without delay, noting that the Chief Minister has indicated plans to approach the Chief Justice for the constitution of a fast-track court. Emphasising the emotional toll on the family, she said the loss has deeply shaken not just their household but also the people of Assam, who want those responsible to be punished under the law.
Addressing questions about the role of Singaporean authorities, Garima reiterated that the investigation was conducted on the basis of the family’s complaint and maintained that they continue to trust both the investigative process and the judiciary to deliver justice.
The SIT has charged four individuals with murder in the case, including Garg’s secretary Siddhartha Sharma, festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, and band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta. Mahanta was associated with organising the North East India Festival, for which Garg had travelled to Singapore, where he died under suspicious circumstances while swimming in the sea on September 19.
In addition, Garg’s two personal security personnel, Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, have been booked on charges of criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust for allegedly misappropriating funds or property entrusted to them. With the chargesheet now submitted, the case is expected to draw close public attention as it moves through the courts.
