Guwahati: Following a fortnight under the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), two individuals central to the ongoing investigation into the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg have been moved to judicial custody. Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta were presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court in Haflong today (October 17) before being lodged in Haflong Jail.
Their transfer marks a new development in the high-profile case, which has seen a total of seven arrests. Five other accused remain detained in Baksa Jail, including Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddhart Sharma, Zubeen’s cousin Sandeepan Garg, and the singer’s two personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the mysterious death of the beloved singer continues to generate intense public and media scrutiny.
Strict security protocols were implemented for the transfer and court appearance of Goswami and Mahanta. Routine medical examinations were conducted on the duo prior to their production in court. Tight security was maintained at both the CID office and the CJM court premises, a measure put in place to preempt any potential disturbances. This heightened vigilance follows previous incidents of unrest in Baksa, where agitated fans reportedly clashed with police during the transfer of other individuals arrested in connection with the case.
Authorities have stressed the need for intensified security to ensure all legal proceedings take place without interruption, underscoring the high level of public interest in the investigation. As the probe into Zubeen Garg’s death unfolds, law enforcement officials are under considerable pressure to conduct a thorough and transparent inquiry.
