Gohpur: In a touching tribute to Assam’s musical legend Zubeen Garg, a sprawling Zubeen Garg Memorial Botanical Garden has been inaugurated along the serene banks of the Buroi River in Gohpur. Spanning nearly 10,000 bighas, the green expanse stands as a living testament to the singer’s enduring love for nature and humanity.
The initiative, led by renowned environmentalist Bakul Gogoi, popularly known as the Tree Man of Assam, was carried out in collaboration with ‘Amar Bonani’ and the residents of Gamiri village. Once a barren, silt-laden stretch of land, the area has now been transformed into a lush botanical sanctuary dedicated to Zubeen’s memory.
As part of the inauguration, 20 Nahor trees (Mesua ferrea)—fondly named “Zubeen Trees”—each standing between 15 and 25 feet tall, were planted by fans and volunteers. These trees now form the symbolic heart of the garden, representing the eternal connection between Zubeen and his admirers.
It was Zubeen Garg’s own wish to inaugurate the garden personally, a dream left unfulfilled after his untimely passing. Since 2017, Bakul Gogoi has been nurturing the garden with dedication, ensuring that Zubeen’s passion for environmental preservation continues to thrive through every leaf and root.
Today, the botanical garden is home to nearly 300 plant species, making it both a sanctuary of biodiversity and a monument of emotion. Speaking at the inauguration, Bakul Gogoi invited fans from across Assam and beyond to visit the garden and contribute to Zubeen’s legacy by planting trees in his honour.
With every sapling that takes root, the Zubeen Garg Memorial Botanical Garden stands as a reminder that while voices may fade, the love they inspire can continue to grow—evergreen and eternal.
