Zubeen Garg’s Family Demands Swift Justice as Investigation Enters Third Week

Guwahati: Nearly three weeks after the tragic death of popular singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore, his family has expressed growing frustration over the slow pace of the investigation, with his wife, Garima Saikia, demanding immediate answers about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Zubeen, 52, reportedly drowned while swimming in the sea on September 19, but questions remain about the events leading to his death. Garima raised concerns over those present during his final moments, asking why individuals like Shekharjyoti Goswami failed to ensure his safety. “I want justice, and I want it very soon,” she told reporters. In a heartfelt social media post, she questioned why Zubeen left them physically, writing that the unanswered questions “burn my empty heart day and night.”

Zubeen’s sister, Palme Borthakur, echoed the call for justice, urging people to support the family emotionally while investigations continue. So far, four arrests have been made, including Zubeen’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, musician Shekharjyoti Goswami, singer Amritprava Mahanta, and Shyamkanu Mahanta, organiser of the North East India Festival. Over 60 FIRs have been filed across Assam, prompting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to direct the Director General of Police to consolidate all cases under a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta.

The SIT has summoned members of the Assam Association of Singapore who were with Zubeen on the yacht during his final hours. Only Rupkamal Kalita appeared on October 8, while others missed the October 6 deadline.

Amid rising public scrutiny, Garima returned the second post-mortem report to authorities, emphasizing that investigators should decide on its release. Chief Minister Sarma clarified that the government cannot legally release the report but certified copies can be obtained through the court.

As the probe continues, the family’s plea for swift and transparent justice grows stronger, reflecting the collective anguish of Assam over the loss of one of its most beloved musical icons.
