Udalguri-Sonitpur, Sept 9: An 18-foot-long python was rescued from the Tal Gereki area near the Police Sub-Inspector’s Bungalow in Tezpur, Sonitpur district, on Tuesday evening, in what the Forest Department described as the largest python rescue in Assam so far this year.
Local residents spotted the python around 7 pm on September 8 and alerted the Forest Department. When the rescue operation did not make immediate progress, local resident Arup Kalita informed snake expert Saurav Borkataki.
Borkataki reached the spot and successfully rescued the python with the assistance of Sarpabandhu Rajballav Sharma and Raj Saurav Borkataki. The Forest Department subsequently helped release the snake safely in the Bhomoraguri forest area.
Forest Department records showed that the python measured 18 feet after its rescue, making it the longest python rescued in the state so far in 2026.
Borkataki said the python was exceptionally large and could stretch across the road. He urged people not to panic or harm wildlife and to inform the Forest Department or experienced snake rescuers whenever such animals were spotted.
He also stressed that rescuing large pythons, releasing them in suitable habitats and taking conservation measures were a collective responsibility.
