Bongaigaon, April 23: Police in Assam’s Bongaigaon district seized 23 cattle suspected to have been transported illegally during a joint operation on Thursday.
The raid was carried out at the residence of an alleged cattle smuggler, identified as Mannat Ali, in Bartari, a border area between Bongaigaon and Barpeta districts. The operation was conducted by personnel from Assam Police, involving teams from Abhayapuri and Mererchar police stations under the supervision of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Abhayapuri.
Officials said the cattle were recovered during the search and subsequently taken to Abhayapuri Police Station, where they are being held as part of the investigation.
Meanwhile, the Goria-Moria-Deshi National Council has alleged that illegal activities, including cattle smuggling and illicit timber trade, have been ongoing in the district for a prolonged period. The organisation has called for stricter enforcement to curb such practices.
Police have not confirmed any arrests so far. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the extent of the network involved.
